A Guide to Decluttering Your Home

Whether you’re moving home, doing some spring cleaning or simply need to have a clear out, decluttering your home is something we all have to do at one time or another. While the process can be stressful, the result is always extremely satisfying, which is why we would recommend that you have a good clear out at least annually. You never know – you might be able to remove enough junk to free up a whole room!

If you’re finding the whole idea a little daunting – don’t worry. In this article, Simply Storage will provide a comprehensive guide to decluttering your home.

Why declutter your home?

The phrase “tidy home, tidy mind” might seem a little cliché, but there’s a whole lot of truth in it. A study carried out by the University of California measured stress levels in 30 couples. Women who described their home environment as messy or chaotic had higher levels of cortisol compared to those lived in a tidier in environment. So, if you’re living in a messy environment and feeling stressed but can’t put your finger on why, there’s science to suggest that the two are linked.

What will you need?

– Time: clearing out your home is not a quick job, so it’s important to set aside enough time to get it done. Pick a date and log it in your calendar. This way, you’ll be much less likely to put it off and won’t be distracted by other tasks.

– Bin bags: while you won’t want to be throwing away everything, there’s a good chance that a great deal of the stuff you find will be heading for the bin – so have lots of bin bags at the ready!

– Cardboard boxes: whether it’s going to be stored somewhere else, put on eBay or given to a charity shop, boxing things up and labelling them will help a great deal when it comes to finding a new home for them.

Your kitchen

When it comes to your kitchen, it tends to be those long neglected draws and shelves which harbour the most clutter. Sift through as much of it as you can, throwing away anything that’s not going to be used or past its sell-by-date, and give the shelves themselves a good scrub if needs be.

Your room

The clutter that builds up in bedrooms will differ from person to person. However, there is one universal: clothes. Regardless of whether you’re a fashionista or not, you’re bound to have a build-up of clothes in your room. To combat this, be realistic about what you don’t wear and either sell it or give it to a charity shop.

Your garage

For most people, garage is clutter HQ and may require a full day to get it sorted. Don’t let this put you off though – be ruthless. Box up large or unwieldy items and either sell them or take them to the tip. For everything else, put it in a bin bag and get rid!
