Long Term Storage Solutions for Clothes

Living in the UK, we have to be extra sartorially savvy when it comes to tackling the weather. In some countries, you might be able to get away with wearing the same clothes year round. Over here though – no chance. Spring, summer, autumn and winter all bring with them unique challenges for our wardrobes to overcome, and usually this leaves us with a surplus of clothes that we don’t know what to do with.

If you’re short on storage space this can be particularly difficult, because those clothes will end up crumpled in a heap somewhere and misshapen. To help combat this problem, the Simply Storage team will be offering some storage solutions for clothes, ready for the season that you want them.

Get rid of clothes you won’t wear again

If you haven’t worn an item of clothing in a year or two, the chances are that you won’t want to wear it again. When it comes to clothes, we can developing a real hoarding mentality, so it’s best to try and face this as soon as possible before you store them. The trick is to lay out all of your clothes into three piles: keep (store), give to charity or friends and throw away. Be as ruthless as you can, you will thank yourself later.

Wash and dry properly

Before storing your clothes the best thing to do is clean them properly, unless you want house bugs coming after them! This may be simply running them through the washing machine or taking them to the dry cleaners, depending on the clothes in question. Don’t bother ironing your clothes though, as you will only have to do this again once you retrieve them.

Don’t use vacuum storage bags

While vacuum storage bags are an excellent invention and can save you tonnes of space when it comes to storing things, they are not always the best pairing when it comes to clothes with natural fibres. Materials such as wool and silk can become damaged when vacuum packed, so never leave such items in vacuum storage for more than a couple of weeks.

Opt instead for plastic storage boxes. While they will not be saving anything like the room that vacuum bags will, they will ensure that all of your clothes remain in top condition.

Store them in the right place

When storing clothes, a good rule to follow is to always store them somewhere dry, cool and dark, ensuring that any coloured clothing remains unfaded. If space is an issue in your house, or if you are just too scared to go into your loft, consider putting your storage boxes into the care of a storage company for a few weeks or months.
