How To Protect Your Furniture When In Storage

Simply Storage

There are many benefits to storing your furniture in a self-storage unit. Decluttering, renovating and travelling away from home are three common reasons why people often choose to store their possessions away for an extended period of time. Interestingly, these three reasons for using self storage are not just for improving one’s home or life, but actually all entail the protection of these possessions for future use. We understand you’ve chosen to store your possessions to return to them, and as such we recognise the importance of keeping your items in pristine condition. As such, we’ve written this article to offer you tips on how to best protect your furniture when placing them in storage.

Cleanliness

The number one tip for protecting your furniture when putting it away in storage is to ensure it is clean. This refers to both the furniture and the storage container. Leaving dirty furniture in a storage container, or alternatively, leaving clean furniture in a dirty container, can cause dust or mould to build up throughout the facility and spread onto other items. In order to combat this, thoroughly clean, dust and polish your furniture prior to placing it in storage. Make sure you’re using different cleaning methods for the different materials of your furniture.

Furthermore, your storage facility will likely be clean when you rent it, however, it is important to be on the lookout for any signs of uncleanliness that could compromise the condition of your furniture. Inspect the storage unit for dust or leaks and ensure any issues are rectified before storing your items.

Wrap up

To protect even further from dust or mould, wrap your furniture up in a sheet of plastic to give it an extra protective layer. The use of protective plastic can also be applied to the storage container floor; this will provide an extra layer of protection to the bottom of your furniture, as well as making it easier to move around.

Dismantling

We recommend dismantling as much furniture as you can before placing it in your storage unit. One reason for this is that by dismantling your furniture, you are able to utilise the space. Neatly storing a folded table top alongside some dismantled table legs will take up much less space than propping up a fully assembled table. Not only will this allow you to manoeuvre yourself around the storage unit better but will also provide space to store more items. Even if you don’t feel you have enough items to take up all the space now, you may need to add extra items in future, so it’s always a good idea to save as much space as possible.

Additionally, dismantling your furniture will prevent any unnecessary stress that could compromise its condition. For example, storing an assembled table and potentially placing some other items on top of it could weaken the table over time. In contrast, neatly storing away dismantled table parts will provide it with greater protection.

Security

It’s one thing to clean, dismantle and wrap up your furniture, but you’re at risk of them being stolen if you don’t secure your storage unit. It is important you ensure safety precautions are in place to maintain the safety of your items. Make sure your storage unit is supported with a robust lock, and that you keep the key safe in your possession. It is also important you are aware of where your storage unit is situated; ensure it is in a safe location and that any storage company you decide to use is reliable and trustworthy.
